Disposal of Waste (Gomi)

Waste Collection Sites and Schedule

Depending on the area in which you reside, there are designated collection sites and schedules for waste. Find out the site and schedule from your neighbor or the property manager, and dispose of your waste accordingly.
Separate your waste into burnable and nonburnable groups. Burnable waste includes paper and kitchen waste, while nonburnable waste includes plastic and plastic products, glassware and the like, which cannot or should not be burned. Take your waste to the designated site on the designated days before 8:00 a.m. Do not put waste out on non-designated days, or at night. As a rule, waste should be taken outside in a container, such as a plastic pail with a lid on it. You can also put waste into the clear bags which are recommended for use by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. Tie the bags with string or seal them with tape so the waste will not spill out.

Burnable Waste (Moeru gomi)

Burnable waste is collected twice a week. Drain any liquid from kitchen waste before you put it out. In principle, waste collection is free of charge, but if you continuously take out more than the daily average of 10 kilograms, or a large amount of waste at any given time, an extra fee (28.5yen per kg.) may be charged.

Nonburnable Waste (Funen gomi)

Nonburnable waste is collected once a week. This includes plastic products which product harmful fumes if burned: rubber products, synthetic leather which cannot be burned, metal objects, glassware, and the like. If it is difficult to judge whether the waste is burnable or nonburnable, put it into the nonburnable group. Broken fragments of glass or pottery, and fluorescent light bulbs should be wrapped in thick paper and labeled "" ("kiken" - danger). Aerosol cans must be punctured before being thrown away.

Collection of Recyclable Waste (Shigen Kaishu)

The collection of recyclable waste is once a week. Recyclable waste refers to newspapers, magazines and corrugated cardboard. Please separate by type and tie up before putting out for collection. For collection of bottles and cans contact the Recycling Promotion Section for collection information.

Large-Size Waste (Sodai gomi)

Large-size waste which cannot be put into a container, such as used furniture, electrical appliances, bicycles, and the like, is collected separately. Collection days are usually twice a month. Call the Large-Size Waste Application Center (Tel. 5296-7000).
When disposing of appliances which contain PCBs, such as television sets, microwave ovens, or air-conditioners, contact the manufacturers and have them remove the PCBs first. This service is provided by the manufacturer at no cost. Unless the parts containing PCBs have been removed, the Waste Collection Office cannot haul it away.

Waste Produced by Businesses (Jigyokei no gomi)

All waste generated from the running of a business requires a fee for disposal. Pay Stickers matching the size of your waste bag must be put on the bag for disposal. (Stickers can be purchased at your local participating "Waste Pay Sticker Location.")
