In Case of Fire
When There is a Fire (Kaji)
Shout a warning to your neighbors.
FIRE
119
Dial 119 (the fire department) and report the site of the fire. When reporting a fire, state the location of the fire, your name and the address of the fire (XX-ku, YY-chome, ZZ-apartment). It is very dangerous to fight the fire by yourself. First, try to keep the fire from spreading until the fire department arrives by using an extinguisher. If cooking oil catches fire, do not pour water on it. Use your extinguisher, a wet bedsheet or another large cloth and throw it over the flames. Try to prevent the fire from reaching the ceiling.
Smoke and toxic fumes from fires are as dangerous as the fire itself. Cover your mouth with a wet towel and stay low when escaping from smoke.
Fire Extinguisher (Shokaki)
Keep at least one extinguisher in your household. it is very effective in the early stages of a first and may help prevent a larger disaster. Be sure you learn how to use it.
To use a fire extinguisher: (1) Remove the safety pin by pulling it upward; (2) Aim the nozzle of the hose toward the fire; (3) Squeeze the lever tightly and spray over the fire. Try to participate in fire prevention drills. Fire extinguishers for household use cost about 10,000yen.

Fire Prevention (Boka)
- Do not smoke in bed.
- When cooking with oil, do not leave the room. If the telephone or doorbell rings, turn off the stove first, then answer.

- Be sure to turn off your iron when you finish.
- Make sure all fires and switches are off before you go to bed.
