Emergency Calls
These emergency hotlines are open 24 hours. You can call at any time from any place, toll-free. When calling from a public phone booth, push the red emergency button, located on the pay phone and dial either 110 or 119. No coins or telephone cards are necessary.
When Calling the Police Concerning Crimes or Accidents:
- First sate the situation clearly (whether you are reporting a crime or accident).
- We were burglarized. = Dorobo desu.
- There has been a traffic accident. = Kotsu jiko desu.
When Calling for a Fire Truck or Ambulance, Start With:
- Saying whether you need a fire trunk or ambulance, since the fire department has both services.
- There is a fire. = Kaji desu.
- Send an ambulance, please. = Kyukyusha o onegai shimasu.
