Libraries (Toshokan)
Sumida City has five public libraries. Besides loaning books, libraries have periodicals (some in English), audio-visual materials, and newspaper reading rooms. The libraries occasionally show motion pictures, sponsor puppet performances and other events.
Hours
Tachibana Library's hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The other four libraries are open from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. (on Sundays they are open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.). The libraries are closed every Monday, for monthly inventory (in principle, the 20th of the Month), for special inventory, and during the New Year holidays.
How to Use the Library
Everyone is allowed to read the books or periodicals while in the library, but only those persons residing, working or studying in Sumida City may borrow books. When you borrow items for the first time, pleas submit identification to confirm your address, such as your foreign resident registration card or driver's license, and register your name. You may borrow up to ten books and five audio materials such as CDs, at one time for a maximum period of three weeks. Also, you may borrow two videotapes for a maximum period of one week.
