Burglaries and Other Crimes

As a first step in the prevention of crime, always lock your door when you leave home.
If your house is burglarized while you are out or if your are physically assaulted, report to your nearest police box or station.

POLICE 110

No area code is needed - just dial 110. If your bankbooks are credit cards are stolen, you must call your bank or credit card company immediately to suspend services.

Police Boxes (Koban)

You have seen manned police boxes around town. These policemen patrol the neighborhood, take care of lost children accept lost items that are turned in. If you become lost or need help finding your destination in an unfamiliar area, you can ask directions at these police boxes.

Traffic Accidents (Kotsu jiko)

No matter how minor it may be, if you are involved in a traffic accident you should report it to the police. If it involved injuries, ask the police to arrange for ambulance. Remember to write down the following:

  1. The license plate number of the car involved in the accident;
  2. Check the other person's drive's license, identity and written down the name, address, and age;
  3. Name of the the other person's insurance company and the policy number;
  4. If there is a witness, try to get his or her name, address and telephone number.

If you are physically hurt, regardless of the lightness of the injury, be sure to go to a hospital immediately. Sometimes injuries become apparent or worsen later.

Lost and Found (Wasuremono)

When you lose something, normally it will be turned in to the police box or station nearest to where you lost it. When items are left on trains, notify either the station where you got on or other station where you got off. Give them all the details of the item you can remember. Items turned in to the police are eventually collected in the following place if not claimed within a certain time period:
